General Information

REPORTING

FORMAL
Two written reports are issued each year - the first is in term 2 followed up with a report evening.  The second report is issued at the end of the school year.

INFORMAL
An evening meeting is held for new parents in early March to meet House Group Tutors to discuss how their child has settled into school.
Staff complete tracking forms once a term.  Deans may make contact with parents if there are important matters parents should know about their child's progress.

HOMEWORK
Homework is required for all students.  Each student is issued with a homework diary which contains a comprehensive homework guide.  Parents are requested to check this diary regularly and to check that set work is being done.

We strongly recommend that a special area is set aside for students to do their homework where there is as little distraction as possible.

Year 9 Between three quarters and one and a quarter hours daily.

Year 10 Between one and one and half hours daily.

Year 11, 12 & 13 Between one and three hours daily depending on the number and nature of the subjects.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
A newsletter is sent home each week - generally on a Friday.  This is the school's main form of informing parents on important matters such as:  school activities, student successes, Board matters, Career information and important dates.

CONTACTING THE SCHOOL
The school has an "open door" policy and welcomes involvement/contact with families.

For most student matters, the appropriate staff with whom to make contact are the House Tutor and/or Head of House.  House Tutors will make contact with families of all new students during Term 1.

Information about specific subjects would involve Heads of Departments, and the Deans would cover the particular year level programmes as a whole, as well as enrolments.

Careers information is available from the Careers Advisor, and the school has a full time Guidance Counsellor should students/families need this support.  The Principal and Deputy Principals are also available to see families.  Class teachers are normally not easy to contact during school hours when they may well be teaching.  Senior staff may be available if you need any assistance.  Please contact the school via the office to make an appointment.  The school office is open between the hours of 8.00am and 4.00pm.  Our phone number is (07) 345 6124.  You can also contact the school by Fax (07) 345 5964 or Email - office@rotorualakes.school.nz  Website:  www.rotorualakes.school.nz

Students with Special Needs
Rotorua Lakes High School caters for learners with special needs in a variety of ways.

Mainstreaming
Students who have verified high or very high needs may, with support from teacher aides and some adaptation of the curriculum, attend normal or home room classes at junior level and alternative classes at senior level.  These students have Individual Educational Programmes and may also be grouped for specialist programmes to better cater for their needs.

Special Education Unit
The Special Education Unit is for students who are verified with high or very high needs and whose needs cannot be adequately met in the normal subject classes.  These students have Individual Education Programmes which may include some main stream classes, community integration, work experience, living skills, physiotherapy, multisensory stimulation and communication programmes.  Specialist support is provided for students who have hearing or visual impairment or physical disabilities.

Fees and Charges

An Activities Fee is payable by all students.  Accounts will be distributed and payments can be made with the school Accounts Officer.

The money is disbursed at the discretion of the Board of Trustees for various activities including cultural and sports equipment, educational, cultural, sporting and social activities, the school magazine and the library.

School Rules
Various rules exist to ensure the orderly running of the school community and to enable the school to fulfill its responsibility for the care of its students.

Most of the rules relate to courtesy, common sense and respect for others at all times.  Students are made aware of the rules as they become familiar with the school.

The school seeks to encourage all students to take responsibility for their own behaviour and to obey the rules which help the school function smoothly.

A full copy of the school rules is listed in the student diary and can be viewed in this website.
